view of nature in art - selected works by Terry Napier
… in art - selected works by Terry Napier, at the Tunstall Square Laneway Gallery. Tags Public Art … view of nature in …

The works chosen, represent what I love to paint.

“Birds and flowers figure heavily in my daily painting, I am constantly intrigued by the complexity that appears in a small space. To me the structure of a flower is brilliant engineering, a bird's wing amazing design, perfect for each bird species. In my paintings I attempt to reveal the detail that we often don't see.

Sometimes we don't have time to sit and watch and art can help by bringing the detail, colour and complexity to the observer.

For me, there is a connection between natural history art and a community. We are all surrounded by it...for some, it is lack of time... or perhaps lack of interest, that make it difficult to see the beauty of nature, but it is there every day.

I hope the collection of works inspire people to visit a park, perhaps to take a chair outside and watch and listen, nature is there.” - Terry Napier

Works on display:

  1. Two Bearded Iris Flowers

About the artist

Terry is a long-time resident of Manningham. Now retired, he started teaching at the Park Orchards Community House in 1996. He had been running botanical and wildlife workshops on weekend at galleries and other venues and the opportunity to teach closer at home was great.

The workshops soon developed into regular classes, and he was soon filling his time a couple of days a week. From these classes emerged the ‘Nature in Art’ program now offered at the Park Orchards Community House and the Canterbury Neighbourhood House. While Terry still prefers to use watercolour in his work, there are now other teachers teaching colour pencil technique.

Having drawn and painted from early in his life, he developed a passion for shape and colours of the natural world. Painting birds and flowers soon opened the world of bees, butterfly’s and other pollinators. Teaching allowed him to share all this with others and perhaps making people aware of the danger in losing more and more of the natural world.

Terry painted with the Wildlife Artist Society and has participated in the botanical exhibitions held at the Royal Botanic Gardens (RGB), Melbourne since the early nineties.

Today his paintings are represented in Victoria’s Sate Collection RBG, The Cranbourne Botanical Collection, the Illustrated Garden RBG and in the Government House Florilegium, held in the state Library of Victoria. They have also found homes in a number of countries around the world.

Located in the heart of Doncaster, Victoria, approximately 12kms from Melbourne's Central Business District.

An activity centre for our community.

  • One of the highest points in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
  • Panoramic views of the Dandenongs, Kinglake and the city's skyline.
  • A 58 hectare area stretching along the major corridors of Doncaster Road, Williamsons Road and Tram Road.

What's happening now?

We’re continuing to update Doncaster Hill to improve the way our community lives, works and enjoys this neighbourhood.

These works form a part of our infrastructure planning for this area and the long standing Doncaster Hill Strategy.

  1. A new park for Doncaster Hill

The concept design for Hepburn Reserve has been developed in response to community feedback and will include outdoor seating, a BBQ area, a drinking fountain, public art, large open lawn areas, a playspace, nature play, canopy tree planting, bike hoops and more.

  2. Walker reserve upgrade

This small local open space was upgraded in November 2019 to December 2020

  3. New U-turn lane on Tram Road

  4. Pedestrian signals at the Applewood Retirement Village

  5. Extension to Hepburn Road

  6. Tram Road and Merlin Street intersection traffic lights

What shapes Doncaster Hill?

With populations on the rise in Melbourne, Doncaster Hill is one of our solutions to meet the challenge of future housing needs. This modern urban village allows those of us who enjoy to live in the suburbs to continue to do so, whilst providing apartment-style living for others.

The Doncaster Hill Strategy helps guide us on the land use and development in this centre.

We're strongly advocating for rail

In addition to bus services, we are strongly advocating for alternate public transport options with the State Government:

A chalk sketch of a conceptualisation of Doncaster Hill station at MC Square
Suburban Rail Loop

That Doncaster station be built in the first stage of construction of the Victorian Government's proposed underground rail link to connect suburbs between Cheltenham and Doncaster.

Congestion on the Eastern Freeway
Build Doncaster Rail along the Eastern Freeway

That the North East Link project preserve a future alignment for Doncaster Rail, and the design of the Doncaster Busway is delivered in a manner that allows it to be transitioned to heavy rail, once the bus system reaches capacity.

Extend Tram route 48 to Doncaster Hill

We maintain passive support for an extension of tram route #48 from Balwyn North to Doncaster Hill. This proposal is not currently on the State Government's agenda.

Unfinished Business Documentary Free Screening
… June, at  9840 9367  or  gallery@manningham.vic.gov.au . MC Square Community Centre Arts Manningham Whats On … Unfinished …

Join us this NAIDOC week for a special screening of the Unfinished Business Documentary at Doncaster Library.

This moving documentary tells the stories of 30 First Nations people living with disabilities. Their deeply personal stories are complex and intertwined with Australia’s political and social history, which has resulted in today’s unacceptably high rates of disability in Australia’s First Nations Communities.

Their stories are also featured in the Unfinished Business exhibition, which is showing at Manningham Art Gallery until Saturday 29 July.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with Uncle John Baxter: Latja Latja/Narungga man, Board Member Reconciliation Victoria and First Peoples Disability Network, Aboriginal Partnership Coordinator - Brotherhood of St Laurence/NDIS, participant and creative collaborator of Unfinished Business.

Attendees will also have the chance to view the exhibition at their own pace.

The Unfinished Business Documentary is a creative collaboration between brothers, Liam and Dieter Knierim, Belinda Mason Knierim OAM, and participants.

This is a free and accessible event. Bookings not required. Refreshments will be provided.

Warning: First Nations peoples should be aware that this exhibition contains images, voices, or names of deceased persons.

Access symbols - wheelchair, service dogs and audio described

If you require an Auslan interpreter to attend this event, please let us know by Friday 30 June, at 9840 9367 or gallery@manningham.vic.gov.au.

Bayi Gardiya - Singing Desert
… Government through the Australia Council for the Arts. MC Square Community Centre Arts Manningham Whats On … Bayi …

Between the Details: Video Art from the ACMI Collection presents Bayi Gardiya - Singing Desert by Dr Christian Thompson AO

In this 360-degree video experience, Christian Thompson invites audiences to walk through the landscape of his childhood. Here they will witness a simple yet profound aesthetic gesture of the artist singing in his traditional Bidjara language, a recognised lost language.

“If I sing even one word of our language, which is considered an extinct or lost language, then it can’t be described as such, because it is being presented as a living language within the art context” - Christian Thompson

See the full program at Between the Details: Video Art from the ACMI Collection.

For further information contact Manningham Art Gallery, gallery@manningham.vic.gov.au or call 9840 9367.

To experience this 360-degree work, please visit the Creative Lab located on the mezzanine floor of Doncaster Library, accessible via the lift in the junior area. There will be a staff member there to assist. Suitable for all ages.

The works in this exhibition are commissioned by ACMI, Artbank, Bundanon Trust, Carriageworks, City of Melbourne, Melbourne Art Foundation, Professor Cav. Simon Mordant AO and Catriona Mordant AM, John Allsopp (Web Directions) and assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts.
