Road upgrade: Alexander Road, Warrandyte
… improvements along Alexander Road to improve accessibility and safety. On this page Roads and footpaths … Road upgrade: Alexander Road, Warrandyte …
Article Content

We're making improvements along Alexander Road to improve accessibility and safety.

The project will include:

  • a new footpath
  • kerb and channel
  • drainage improvements

Where is it?

These improvements will be constructed along Alexander Road in Warrandyte, between Heidelberg-Warrandyte Road and the back of Warrandyte High School.

A map showing the location of the proposed footpath construction along Alexander Road, Warrandyte.

Why is it needed?

Upgrades to Alexander Road have been prioritised based on both community feedback and strategic planning, which identified a need for improved drainage, safer paths, and better road conditions.

Alexander Road scored highly in our footpath priority program due to its proximity to Warrandyte High School, key bus stops, and the Main Yarra Trail. The works will upgrade the road surface and provide safer, more accessible paths, making it easier and safer for residents and students to move around the area and encouraging more walking and active transport.

Drainage improvements are a key part of the project, responding to concerns raised by residents about stormwater runoff and erosion. The existing deep table drains will be replaced with a new underground drainage system designed to reduce flooding risks, prevent erosion, and lower maintenance needs and costs.

When will the works happen?

We plan to design this project as part of our 2024/25 Capital Works Program.

Wittons Reserve
… area because of the remnant vegetation on the site and its wildlife corridor function. Reserve Road Wonga Park …

Wittons Reserve is a large reserve (4.83ha) located along the Yarra River between areas of the Warrandyte State Park. It has already been identified as a major recreation activity node. It also is an important conservation area because of the remnant vegetation on the site and its wildlife corridor function.

The Reserve and the State Park are popular for many outdoor activities including canoeing, swimming, bush walking and picnicking.  There is also a small playspace consisting of a swing set only.  The canoe launch provides a very popular canoeing/kayaking day trip from Homestead Road to Wittons Reserve.  The popular walk to Mt Lofty features spectacular views and the chance to see such wildlife as kangaroos and koalas.

This small reserve is located on the corner of Merna Drive and Church Street and across the road from Templestowe Park Primary School.

It has the potential to function as recreational open space. While Mandella Reserve primarily services the school catchment with play and informal recreation opportunities, Merna Reserve could be enhanced with additional tree planting and some park furniture catering for parents waiting for school children.

The 2004 Open Space Strategy identified the Reserve as a potential area for planting new River Red Gums. A low brick wall framing the entrance to the residential estate occupies the corner of the Reserve.
