Shelter your home: Garden design for home comfort and resilience
… Shelter your home: Garden design for home comfort and resilience Environment and sustainability … Function Centre Free Environment and sustainability Home comfort and energy information - Online drop-in session …

Thoughtful garden design can lower indoor and outdoor temperatures while creating a more comfortable and resilient home.

Our city is getting hotter, with more days of extreme heat. Learn how to stay comfortable and safe – without racking up a huge power bill – by sheltering your home with trees and vines.

We’ll explore:

  • sun angles throughout the year
  • how to conduct a basic site analysis at home
  • how to select shade trees, vines and wind breaks
  • plant positions for summer shade while letting the winter sun shine through for free heating in the cooler months
  • practical solutions for renters.

Our presenter:
Kat Lavers is the gardener and designer behind The Plummery, a 1/14th acre urban permaculture system in Melbourne's north that produces almost all the vegetables, herbs, fruit and eggs consumed by the household! She’s realised that with good design, growing lots of food is possible even with limited time, space and resources.

Registrations are essential.

As gas prices increase and more people are looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprint, the transition to an all-electric home is both financially appealing and a sure way to take action against climate change.

This information session will help you understand:

  • economic and environmental benefits of reducing your household gas (and fuel) consumption
  • steps to creating an efficient, all-electric home that can accommodate electric vehicles in the future
  • ways to power your home with renewables, if your household is not able to have solar
  • your eligibility for the wide range of rebates

All Manningham residents who attend on the night will go into the draw to win a Virtual Home Energy Assessment worth $225!

This phone assessment will be tailored to your household, helping you to plan for a cost-effective and comfortable transition away from gas. We may contact the winner to check on progress in both reducing bills and making the home more energy efficient.

To attend this event, you must have an internet enabled PC or device and be able to download Zoom. Don’t have Zoom? Download it for free. You’ll be provided with the Zoom meeting link when you book.

This free information session is brought to you by Manningham and the Australian Energy Foundation. If you're unable to make the session, you can still learn more about how to keep your home cool while saving energy on the Australian Energy Foundation website.

This event is for Manningham residents only.

By improving your home's efficiency, you can lower your bills and create a more comfortable home for your family.

Interested in making your home more comfortable and energy efficient, but don’t know where to start?

Our expert presenter Lucinda has worked with hundreds of households to improve their home's comfort and energy efficiency.

Instead of focusing on how to upgrade, Lucinda will help you review the strengths and weaknesses of your own home, so that you feel confident about where to start and how to prioritise your efforts.

During the session, we’ll talk about:

  • how heat moves in and out of homes, so you can identify the areas creating heat movement (loss or gain)
  • home upgrades that can reduce heat movement such as draught sealing, insulation, window treatments, glazing, frames and shading
  • identify the most important upgrades for your home
  • review and rank your major appliances in terms of age, efficiency and need for upgrade

There will be time for questions throughout, so you can understand what matters and why.

We will also provide a matching data collection sheet to take home, plus additional resources, so that you can gather further information and pinpoint areas you need to investigate further.

One week after this event, join an optional one hour online Q&A, where you can ask all of those questions you forgot to ask or didn't realise you needed to!

Registrations are essential.

  • This workshop is funded by Manningham Council and hosted in partnership with Ajani Neighbourhood House.
