Seeing small birds visit our gardens is a wonderful experience and there are many ways we can create our gardens to encourage their visits.

This workshop will share some of the challenges small birds face in the urban environment and what can be done to create a safe and inviting home for them.  A few of the local small bird champions will also be introduced and the session includes tips for providing food, shelter, water and breeding sites to create habitat for birds.

Presenter: Charlotte Harrison from Sustainable Gardening Australia.

Supper is at 6.45pm, the seminar begins at 7.00pm sharp.

Registration is essential.

This is the final session of a four-part series on Gardening for Biodiversity. The series of workshops is run by Sustainable Gardening Australia and provides tips and tricks to garden for wildlife and support biodiversity in your local area.

The former Warrandyte Post Office
… is an incorporated association run by a committee of management. The group is affiliated with the Whitehorse …

The early Victoria building, constructed circa 1876 is of regional significance for its historical importance as being the only relatively intact building in the town's main street dating from the gold mining period.

Henry Squires first used the building as a Post Office in 1893. Australia Post terminated its lease of the building in 1972 after which it was used as a residence for many years.

The original post office was partly destroyed by fire in 1982. Local efforts saw its reconstruction achieved between 1985 and 1988 and the building was reopened as a community and tourist information centre in 1987.

Even though it has been rebuilt, some original sections of the building remain. The new sections of the building have been reconstructed with some care to the original detailing.

Tom Kelly Athletics Track

Tom Kelly Athletics Track is the only athletics facility in Manningham. As well as serving local residents through the junior and senior club structure, it also services schools within and outside of Manningham.

Tom Kelly Athletics Track Usage Plan

As part of our ongoing commitment to making sporting facilities more accessible we have reviewed the way in which the community use the Tom Kelly Athletics Track. We spoke to many users of the Athletics Track through our onsite consultation sessions and online survey.

After hearing your ideas, we developed the Tom Kelly Athletics Track Usage Plan.

The Plan was endorsed at the 31 October Council Meeting and implementation of the Plan is now underway.

Apply to have the interest on your rates waived

If you do not pay your rates by the due date, you may be charged interest.

We can only waive the interest if we have made an error or under exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances include:

  • Compassionate grounds – ratepayers may have interest waived where they have demonstrated compassionate grounds for a payment being late. Acceptable compassionate grounds would generally relate to a family illness or death.
  • Financial hardship – ratepayers may have interest or part interest waived where they have demonstrated that the payment of such interest would cause severe financial hardship.

Edible Gardening Seminar Series
… worms, bokashi or chooks to turn kitchen and garden waste into black gold for your garden. Tuesday 22 November: …

The Sustainable Gardening Australia, Edible Gardening Seminar Series is a complete home gardening program that will teach you how to grow your own delicious fresh, healthy, and nutritious food at home.

Growing your own food can be not only rewarding and enjoyable but can also save you money as well.

Each seminar will cover a different aspect of growing organic food including soil preparation, pest and diseases and selecting what fruits and vegetables are right for your garden.

Edible gardening topics

  • Tuesday 11 October: Getting Started with Veggie Gardening
The first step is to want to grow organically, but where do you start? This workshop will set you up to start your veggie gardening journey so you can enjoy the benefits of growing your own fresh, healthy, and nutritious food.
  • Tuesday 18 October: Healthy Soil for Produce Gardening
Healthy soil is full of life and fundamental to the health of our gardens, providing plants with all the nutrients and water they need to grow. Good soil is essential for growing produce.
  • Tuesday 8 November: Dealing with Garden Pests without Harsh Chemicals - CANCELLED
Garden pests can be managed using nature and its resources to strengthen the balance within your garden, avoiding unnecessary chemical use.
  • Tuesday 15 November: Composting and Worm Farming
Using compost, worms, bokashi or chooks to turn kitchen and garden waste into black gold for your garden.
  • Tuesday 22 November: Preparing for Summer Harvest
Everything you need to know to grow fresh produce at home this summer.

Food and gardening swap

Bring along your home-grown foods, seedlings, and other gardening items to share with someone else. The home-grown food and seed swap takes place 20 minutes prior to the start of the seminar. So don't forget to bring your own treats to share.

This program is part of the wider Spring Outdoors Sustainable Gardening Australia Seminar Series. This series includes seminars and webinars at Nillumbik and Banyule councils.

Ruffey Creek Linear Park runs along Ruffey Creek Valley in Templestowe from Ruffey Lake Park (King Street) to Finns Reserve, where the creek enters the Yarra River. The park is almost entirely a bush experience landscaped with native vegetation alongside a recently constructed shared path. Highlights of the Linear Park include the fantastic destinations at each end.

Places and spaces

  • Ruffey Trail - bicycle and pedestrian path
  • Wetland and bush areas
  • Wombat Bend Playground and Main Yarra Trail at Finns Reserve
  • The Boulevarde, Church Road North and Victoria Street playground at Ruffey Lake Park
  • Barbecues, picnic shelters, open parkland, bushland and public toilets at all destinations

Pedestrian links

  • James Street
  • Montpellier Crescent
  • Glen Court
  • Kersey Place
  • Montpellier Crescent

Bring your dog

Off lead reserve, except within 15 metres of a playground, barbecue area or where a sporting event is in progress. Once the trail is completed (refer Ruffey Creek Linear Park Management Plan 2017), dogs will be required to be on-lead within five metres of the trail.

Vegetation

Within the Linear Park, Ruffey, Biosite 30 comprises 7.35 hectares remnant vegetation located in three sections; one at the Yarra River at Finns Reserve, another upstream of Foote Street at St. Kevins Primary School and the third in Ruffey Lake Park. The vegetation is considered high priority in Council’s Healthy Habitats Bushland Management Strategy 2012. The creek valley has always been considered important as a wildlife corridor and appropriate screen planting of indigenous vegetation, weed management and integration of these adjoining reserves should continue.

Ruffey Trail

The Ruffey Trail, a major feature of the Linear Park, offers a bushland experience for pedestrians and cyclists on an off-road three kilometre shared path. The trail crosses four major roads between Finns Reserve and Ruffey Lake Park. There are underpasses (with lighting) at King Street and Williamsons Road and road crossings at Foote Street and Parker Street. Cyclists and pedestrians currently also use Eumeralla Avenue as there is no footpath or trail in this section.

Trail Length

3.0 km (sealed)
