… for this event is required. Manningham Function Centre Environment and Sustainability Inspired Living Series …

Come along to celebrate the launch of our 2025 Inspired Living Series with a panel of two inspiring local storytellers and eco-adventurers!

Beau Miles

Beau is a father, YouTuber, author of The Backyard Adventurer, wannabe farmer and maker of stuff from other people's junk. Known for oddball storytelling that aims to turn seemingly mundane or silly ideas into things that are enjoyable, challenging and insightful. Beau is known for his ‘Backyard Adventurer’ philosophy of connecting people with their local heritage, history and environment.

Cezary Carmichael (Two Birders Two Bikes One School)

Cezary is a 19-year-old filmmaker and student who recently completed a year-long journey on his bike around Australia to fund the development of a school in Timor-Leste (raising more than $120,000). His upcoming documentary will explore the cultural and ecological significance of birds in Australia and the importance of storytelling and communication in fostering community.

In this workshop, primary school-aged children are invited to join the staff from Awareaway to create fish from re-purposed plastic waste. The fish will then be displayed as part of the 'School of Plastic Fish' exhibition at the Box Hill Community Art Centre.

Participation in the workshops is free but places are limited.

The exhibition runs from 23 May until 29 May 2022 at the Box Hill Community Art Centre.

'School of Plastic Fish' is an exhibition responding to the alarming study that predicts by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans.

The fish depict an eerie yet beautiful ocean-scape where they are displayed, reminding us of a possible future and encouraging us to embrace positive behaviour change to reimagine a better and more sustainable future.

Awareaway is a social and environmental enterprise, co-founded by Sophie Dahm and Alex Child, dedicated to sustainable and creative design by re-purposing and up-cycling plastic waste.

Preventing elder abuse
… project is a partnership between Eastern Community Legal Centre and Swinburne University. The project engages with … 821 Website: seniorsrights.org.au/ Eastern Community Legal Centre Phone: 9762 6235 Website: eclc.org.au/contact-us/ …

Everyone has the right to live their lives free from abuse.

There’s a number of things we can all do to prevent elder abuse from getting out of hand such as:

  • respecting older people and call out ageism
  • listen to older people and their care partner
  • check in with vulnerable older people

Elder abuse is hard to picture, but happens every day. What starts out small doesn't always stay that way.

What is elder abuse?

Actions causing harm to an older person from someone they know or trust is elder abuse. It can include:

  • taking their money or possessions
  • not providing necessary care
  • making threats or stopping an older person’s from contacting others socially
  • physical or sexual abuse.

Anyone experiencing elder abuse may:

  • act fearfully or withdraw
  • show signs of stress, anxiety or depression
  • show signs of bruising or other physical injuries
  • not have the ability to pay their bills and expenses.

Elder abuse often occurs within close relationships and is a form of family violence. It’s unacceptable and we need to call it out.

How we can stop elder abuse

There’s several actions we can take to stop elder abuse and includes:

  • staying connected in the community
  • seeking independent advice
  • developing a support network of trusted friends and professionals
  • seeking help.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing elder abuse, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Learn more about how we’re tackling ageism in Manningham.

Getting help and assistance

Compass

Compass is a national website created to help older Australians navigate the complex issue of elder abuse and to guide action to end the problem. Compass make resources and information available both for older Australians and for the people who care for and support them.

As a voice for action, Compass acts against elder abuse by raising nationwide awareness of this growing social issue and simplifying the process of connecting people to services and information that can help.

OPERA: Older People, Equity, Respect and Ageing

The OPERA project is a partnership between Eastern Community Legal Centre and Swinburne University. The project engages with older people about their experiences of ageing and age discrimination in the community.

The aim of the project is to ensure that older people feel valued and respected. It’s also about challenging some of the harmful beliefs and attitudes that can lead to age discrimination.

Every individual has the right to feel safe, respected and valued.

Creating space for carers - workshop
… Learning to register. The Pines Learning and Activity Centre Seniors Whats On … Creating space for carers - workshop …

Join Veronica from A Hand to Help as she shares tried and true methods to help:

  •  downsize
  •  declutter
  •  and spring clean to make space for growth and new possibilities.

Plus, how to recycle to reduce landfill in a mindful and thoughtful way, and part with possessions while reflecting on the memoires they evoke.

This is a free event, however registrations are essential.

Contact Pines Learning to register.
