Everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or background, should feel safe, accepted and included.

Join us in recognising International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

IDAHOBIT raises awareness of the violence and discrimination still faced by LGBTQIA+ people across the globe. This year’s IDAHOBIT theme is The Power of Communities.

After raising the rainbow flag outside the Manningham Civic Centre, we’ll head inside to the Manningham Function Centre to enjoy morning tea  and hear from guest speaker Charlie, from LGBTQIA+ youth charity Minus18. Charlie will share some of the barriers and challenges that LGBTQIA+ young people experience, along with practical tips for supporting your LGBTQIA+ friends and family.

This is a free event, however registrations are essential.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Ausome Hoops, a basketball program specifically designed for young people with Autism

Ausome Hoops delivers weekly programs to kids on the spectrum, providing a safe, inclusive space where they can learn how to play basketball free from the judgment from others that may be present in mainstream sports programs.
The program was created after Phoebe McShane saw a lack of Autism-Inclusive sport programs available for her younger brother. His experiences saw him struggle to stick to a sport for more than 6 months due to the lack of knowledge and support from coaches and peers. He had tried just about every sport offered in their area but hadn’t found the right fit. And from here, Ausome Hoops was born!
Bulleen Boomers have been running Ausome Hoops for three years now, positively impacting the lives of not only the participants, but their families as well.
“Ausome Hoops is the best part of our week! My son loves the sessions, and I can sit back and relax, knowing he is in great hands. I used to help with him in the sessions when he first started, but he is so confident now that I can step away and just enjoy watching him!”

Please contact Jen for further information or if you require an invoice for NDIS before registering to attend.

Join wildlife ecologist John Harris as we undertake a biodiversity survey of 100 Acres Reserve. This community biodiversity survey is part of the global City Nature Challenge (CNC).

How to participate

It is free, easy, and fun to get involved.

Bring your mobile phone or digital camera to take pictures of the wild plants, animals and fungi you see, or make sound recordings of frog or bird calls.

Any observations taken over the four days, need to be uploaded to iNaturalist and included in the City Nature Challenge 2023.

To prepare for the guided walks and talks:

  • install the iNaturalist app on your mobile phone and create an iNaturalist account
  • make sure your phone battery is fully charged on the day
  • wear weather-appropriate clothing, bring a rain/wind-proof jacket, and wear safe, fully-enclosed walking shoes to go in long grass
  • bring your own drink bottle and snacks
  • become a member of the Melbourne City Nature Challenge project to discover nature in our neighbourhoods

About the City Nature Challenge

The City Nature Challenge runs from Friday 28 April to Monday 1 May 2023.

In this worldwide BioBlitz, cities compete to make the most observations of the most species by the most people.

Manningham is collaborating with over 25 local governments to form the Greater Melbourne project.

Last year Greater Melbourne came 33rd from 445 cities for the number of observations made. Hume City came fourth amongst the other local government areas.

Manningham City Council has partnered with Richmond Institute to deliver Mental Health First Aid training to volunteers of Manningham sport and recreation clubs.

Using practical, evidence-based action plan, this mental health first aid (MHFA) course equips people with the knowledge and skills to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, and assist someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

This opportunity is available for two people per club.

The Blended Face to Face course is made up of two components:

  1. eLearning online modules (3-4 hours completed prior to workshop)
  2. Face-to-face workshop (4 hours)

It is strongly encouraged to have completed the e-Learning modules prior to the face-to-face session as this session will present scenarios and activities that apply these learnings.

Topics include:

  • Mental Health in the Community
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use

To register, speak to your club and then get in touch with our Recreation Participation Officer.

Please note: the session on Monday 2 May will be held at the Manningham Function Centre
