Guest-curated by Kent Morris (Barkindji), it presents works by leading First Nations artists including Vernon Ah Kee, Gordon Bennett, Destiny Deacon, Jimmy Pike, and Judy Watson. Their powerful responses are shown alongside the remarkable creative achievements of former and current prison inmates, many of whom have connected with their culture and Country through The Torch program, such as Thelma Beeton, Stacey Edwards, Robby Wirramanda and Sean Miller.

The exhibition is showing until 20 July 2025 in the Heide Main Galleries.

Visit the Heide website for opening hours and information about how to plan your visit.

Bold new exhibition comes to Manningham

A new larger-than-life exhibition is now open at the Manningham Art Gallery in Doncaster....

Article Content

A new larger-than-life exhibition is now open at the Manningham Art Gallery in Doncaster.

Pages of Me: A Bird, an Eye, Clouds, Ice cream, is a multimedia project by celebrated Melbourne artist and designer Beci Orpin.

Drawing from her textile-focused background, Orpin delves into mascot culture by creating a giant cat called Pomme, set in a display of oversized pages pulled from her sketchbook, blending bold patterns, found images and positive mantras.

The exhibition explores finding happiness through individuality and acceptance, and visitors are drawn in to read the mantras from Orpin’s pages and catch further glimpses of Pomme.

“The idea for the mascot came from seeing a series of photos of mascots caught in odd, unexpected places – doorways, ticket booths, elevators,” Orpin said.

“It struck me both as comical and a metaphor for getting ‘stuck in the cracks’. I often say that ‘the cracks’ are where I exist – somewhere between creative categories, never fully fitting into one genre.

“Though it can be challenging to exist in ‘the cracks’, it’s where I’m most authentic, where I can be fully myself and do my best work.”

Visitors are encouraged to get creative at the gallery themselves, drawing their own mascot, based on their unique qualities.

Orpin is known for her signature application of colour, shape and optimism. She has collaborated with major brands and organisations including Apple, Google Disney, Uniqlo and the Australian Ballet.

Manningham Mayor Deirdre Diamante said: “We’re thrilled to have such a highly regarded artist exhibit at the Manningham Gallery. It’s a wonderful exhibition and I encourage you to come and see it for yourself while you can.”

Pages of Me continues until Saturday 5 April 2025.

Manningham Art Gallery, 687 Doncaster Road, Doncaster, is open Wednesdays to Saturdays, 11.00am to 4.00pm.

For more information, visit our events calendar.

New major exhibition opens at Manningham Gallery

Painted Country – a new major exhibition featuring the work of five First Nations artists – is now open at the Manningham Art Gallery in Doncaster.

The artists – Nellie Ngampa Coulthard, Brenda Napaltjarri, Clara Napurrula, Rene Sundown and Adrian Jurra Tjungurrayi – bring diverse practices and perspectives to reveal their unique depictions of the Australian landscape in their work.

The senior and emerging artists represent two Indigenous arts centres – Iwantja Arts in South Australia and Papunya Tula Artists in the Northern Territory.

The exhibition has been timed to coincide with National Reconciliation Week, which is held each year from 27 May to 3 June, with the 2025 theme Bridging Now to Next.

Aboriginal writer, artist, arts worker and Aboriginal affairs advocate from Cape York Peninsula Jack Wilki-Jans has described the 14 artworks featured in Painted Country as “hypnotic visions” of the artists’ Country.

“Visions of a wide country, a country of colour and texture, of sand dunes and salt lakes, scorched earth and radiant sunsets, of brushes and sweeping tufts of grasses with flowers – Australia!” Jack Wilki-Jans  said.

“It isn’t the hand that paints which this exhibition exalts, it’s the eyes which see.”

This celebration of First Nations contemporary painting is presented in collaboration with Alcaston Art Gallery, with special thanks to the artists, Iwantja Arts in South Australia and Papunya Tula Artists in the Northern Territory.

Flux
… Flux Art exhibitions Flux is a showcase of Anni Hagberg’s research … Art Gallery  presents a diverse range of contemporary art exhibitions and related public programs throughout the year. See all  upcoming exhibitions . … Flux …

Flux is a showcase of Anni Hagberg’s research into the use of unpredictable and fluid combinations of materials in art making and the implications it has on understandings of authorial control. In her ceramic practice, Hagberg fires clay and a range of ‘waste’ materials such as broken glass, discarded steel and dried out glaze to encourage a range of dynamic and unexpected results.

On the one hand, the abstract forms Hagberg produces through this process imitate rubble or decaying architectural features, thereby betraying the secrets of their composition. On the other, they are as familiar and beguiling as any decorative art object, bearing flourishes of colour and captivating textures and patterns.

By approaching materials and processes as co-contributors, Flux seeks to question the idea of individual creative genius, highlighting the gulf that can lie between what an artist intends or imagines their work will look like and what it ends up being. As well, by elevating materials that are otherwise valueless to the status of desirable or contemplative object, it contributes to a broader cultural conversation around excessive consumption, waste and equity of access to resources.

Exhibition opening

Featuring opening remarks from Manningham Mayor Cr. Andrew Conlon, as well as Anni Hagberg in conversation with Manningham Art Gallery curator, Davey Warnock, and concurrent exhibitor Rhys Cousins.

When: Saturday 28 August 2.00pm to 3.30pm.
Cost: This is a free event but places are limited.

Ceramics Masterclass: Making Art From Waste

Join ceramic artist Anni Hagberg to discover a whole new world of ceramics. This two-session workshop for adults will encourage the participants to play and experiment with techniques of combining clay with discarded materials and 'waste' to create unique ceramic art.

Workshop Dates:

Saturday 11 September, 2.00pm to 4.00pm

Saturday 18 September, 2.00pm to 4.00pm

Price: $40 full / $32 concession.

All visitors to Manningham Art Gallery will be required to register their attendance via QR Code upon arrival and comply with current COVID-19 guidelines, including social distancing and the wearing of face masks when social distancing cannot be practiced.

There is a legal process to enable the planning scheme to be amended. You can find the recent changes to our planning scheme below.

How the amendment process works

  1. Council meeting

Resolution to seek authorisation from the Minister for Planning to prepare and exhibit an amendment

  2. Authorisation may or may not be granted by the Minister for Planning, or may granted subject to conditions.

  3. Public exhibition

Opportunity for the public, and other key stakeholders, to make a written submission in support of, or objection, to the proposed amendment

  4. Council meeting

Consideration of all written submissions. Council must then decide to either:

    • change the amendment in the manner requested
    • refer submissions to an independent Panel for review
    • abandon all or part of the amendment
  5. Panel hearing

Consideration of the submissions by an independent Panel, appointed by the Minister for Planning

  6. Council Meeting

Consideration of the Panel's findings and recommendations. Council must then decide to either:

    • adopt the amendment (with or without changes), or
    • abandon all or part of the amendment
  7. Submission of final adopted amendment by Council to the Minister for Planning for approval

  8. Minister for Planning approves or refuses the amendment

New exhibition puts everyday life into focus at Manningham Art Gallery

Article Content

A powerful new exhibition by artist Katrin Koenning is now on show at the Manningham Art Gallery.

Mirrors brings everyday moments into focus, exploring themes of connection and belonging through a deeply personal collection of photographs.

Drawn from Koenning’s archive spanning the past two decades, the exhibition offers intimate glimpses into people, places and the natural world. Through these images, stories of love, loss and life are told.

“The picture is such a tiny part – the value lies in the act of relating and how these relations live in the world,” says Koenning.

Born in Dortmund, Germany, and now based in Melbourne, Koenning’s work focuses on relationships between people, communities and the environment.

Her photographs have been exhibited widely, including at the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, as well as internationally in Dubai, Bangladesh, and Paris.

Her work has also appeared in major publications such as The New Yorker, The Guardian, Zeit Magazine, and Vogue.com.

Mirrors invites visitors to pause, reflect, and connect with the beauty of everyday life.

The exhibition is on show until Saturday 18 October at the Manningham Art Gallery, MC Square, 687 Doncaster Road, Doncaster. The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 11:00am to 4:00pm. Entry is free.
