Hear from local ecologist John Harris about Manningham's threatened species and the challenges they face, including habitat loss, invasive species and climate change.

Manningham is home to 56 threatened animal species, including the Brush-tailed Phascogale, Grey-headed Flying-fox, Swift Parrot and Barking Owl.

There are 466 threatened plant species, 246 of which are critically endangered.

A species is considered threatened when it's at risk of extinction within a local area, even if it's not globally endangered.

About the presenter

John Harris (BASc, GDipEd) is the Director and Principal Zoologist/Ecologist at Wildlife Experiences. With a background in both environmental science and education, John has led fauna and flora surveys, environmental audits and sustainability programs across Victoria and beyond.

He's also an experienced educator, delivering seminars, guiding Nature Stewards walks, and formerly teaching secondary science for more than 17 years.

Manningham Environment Seminar Series - Threatened Fauna Species of Manningham

Spend an evening with local ecologist John Harris and learn about threatened fauna species that are found locally in Manningham

Manningham is home to a significant number of threatened species, both animals and plants, facing threats like habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. The municipality has identified 56 threatened animal species, including some of national and state significance like the Brush-tailed Phascogale, Grey-headed Flying-fox, Swift Parrot, and Barking Owl. Additionally, there are 466 threatened plant species, with a substantial portion (246) considered critically endangered. #Swifft State Wide Integrated Flora and Fauna Teams

A species is determined to be threatened when its population within a specific geographic area (like Manningham or Victoria) is at risk of extinction, even if it's not globally threatened. This can happen due to factors like habitat loss, invasive species, or pollution within that area, making the species susceptible to local extinction.

John Harris (BASc, GDipEd) is the Director and Principal Zoologist / Ecologist at Wildlife Experiences.

John has worked in both the environmental and education sectors, often combining the two. As an ecological consultant, John has been involved in flora and fauna surveys, environmental audits, flora and fauna salvaging (spotter/catcher) and as sustainability adviser in Victoria and interstate. He has co-authored or contributed to a number of books on wildlife, authored many flora and fauna assessment reports and management plans.

He is also an environmental educator working with landcare groups, delivering seminars for local governments and also provides fauna presentation and walks for the Nature Stewards program. He was previously in the education sector for over 17 years as a secondary Biology/Science teacher as well as Environment and Sustainability Manager.

What is a petition?

Petitions are a way that lets you bring an issue of concern to us, so we may take action. It’s important to note that for us to consider a petition, it must relate to the powers of Manningham.

How to get Council to consider my petition?

You can find out what you need include in a petition via Council’s Governance Rules.

For us to consider a petition, it must:

contain a minimum number of 5 signatories for a paper petition, and 10 signatories for an electronic petition;
be in a legible and permanent form of writing, typing or printing;
not be defamatory, indecent, abusive or objectionable in language or substance;
not relate to a matter beyond the powers of Council; and
with the exception of online petitions which have been printed by Council officers, every page of the petition must bear the wording of the whole of the petition and include the name, address and signature of petitioners

To ensure that we’re able to consider your petition, the petition should also include everything Council should consider and the following details of petitioners on every page:

How to submit my petition?

For us to consider your petition, we must receive the petition by close of business on the Monday before a meeting. We can’t guarantee that we’ll hear any late petitions. We may consider late petitions in the following meeting.

Who will present my petition in the meeting?

A Councillor will present your petition to the Council meeting.

If it’s a ward matter, your ward Councillor will usually be the presenter.

The relevant Council officer will investigate the petition. The lead petitioner will receive advice on the progress of the petition and any action taken.

The Manningham Junior Ranger Program is designed to get young environmentalists out and active in our local environment.

Go on a bush park discovery walk with Environment Officers as they explore why Currawong Bush Park is known as the best little wilderness in town.

Survive a live wildlife show presented by Wild Action, the Zoo that comes to you.

Experience nature as a place to play, imagine, relax and explore.

Important information:

Children must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to start time.
Come prepared and dress for the weather on the day. Please wear closed-toed footwear.
Don’t forget to bring a snack and water bottle for morning tea.
In the event of extreme weather, this event will be cancelled.
Currawong Bush Park is protected habitat, dogs are not permitted in the park at any time.

This highly flexible space serves a number of opportunities such as performances, exhibitions, dinners and so much more.

The high ceilings are fitted with trusses which accommodates theatre lighting and projection capabilities

The auditorium can be set up utilising a lecture style layout or a banquet/round table layout. This space can offer options for all your specific event needs.

The space will seat 200 people comfortably around tables or in rows and will be able to be set up with the chairs facing any direction. The flooring is a neutral grey carpet tile which will help with acoustics and allow for easy movement of tables and chairs.

On arrival from the foyer you have flexible entry opportunities, with three sets of double doors leading into the auditorium. The large windows along the eastern wall allow for natural light to stream into the space and can also be blocked with blinds if dimmer settings are required.

For those requiring a green room, or a back stage performance area, there is a space off the north wall either side of the stage which also includes bathroom facilities.

The foyer and community kitchen are available for additional booking fee to offer hospitality for events in the auditorium.

You will need to bring the following:

photo ID such as a drivers licence
a dog lead if you're collecting a dog.

How much does it cost?

If your pet:

is impounded during business hours (between 7.00am and 7.00pm), the release fee is $120.00
is impounded outside business hours (between 7.00pm and 7.00am), the release fee is $170.00
is not collected on the day it was impounded, an additional daily fee of $20.00 is charged for each subsequent day, to care for the animal.

Additional fees apply if your pet is not already microchipped or registered with us.

Microchip and register your pet to avoid future fees.

If you are looking to find a new pet, we have a long standing arrangement with the Blue Cross Animal Society to assist us in rehousing animals.

Join Manningham Council’s Waterwatch Coordinator Nigel Philpot for a walk along Mullum Mullum Creek.

Along the way, we will make multiple stops to test the water quality of the creek. From this, we can assess the impacts of stormwater pollution.

The return walk is a considerable 5km so come prepared with snacks/lunch, a water bottle and good walking shoes.

Difficulty: Moderate-hard (Long fast walk along a shared walking/bike path.)

Manningham Community Fund is a charitable fund account of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation. The fund is a separate legal entity from the City of Manningham.

The Fund has been established to raise much-needed funds to help community organisations with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR)* status support the needs of people living in Manningham. It does this by encouraging tax-deductible donations, gifts and bequests that build up the fund corpus in perpetuity. Each year the fund earns income (in the form of interest) which can then be available to the community in the form of grants.

The Manningham Community Fund supports and distributes funds to community organisations to create a positive change in the community.

Apply to the Manningham Community Fund

The Manningham Community Fund supports and distributes funds to community organisations in Manningham. It operates under the umbrella of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, which has been supporting charities across the Melbourne metropolitan area since 1923.

The Manningham Community Fund will accept applications for grants up to the maximum value of $10,000. There's no minimum amount you can apply for.

Activities must be based in the City of Manningham.

Funding is available annually to community organisations that have:

Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status as covered by Item 1 in the section 30-15 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997
Endorsed as a Taxation Concession Charity (TCC).

How to apply

Applications are closed and will reopen in 2026

Not for profit organisations with DGR (1) status that deliver activities to benefit the Manningham community will be invited to apply.

Donate to the Manningham Community Fund

Donating to the Manningham Community Fund enables us to offer grants to charitable organisations to create a positive change in the community.

The fund is a separate legal entity from the City of Manningham.

The 2025 Manningham Asian Cultural Festival will feature a fantastic lineup of cultural performances, delicious street food and family friendly activities.

A celebration of culture and community, the event will finish with a fireworks display.

We encourage you to leave your pets at home so they don’t get frightened by the fireworks. If you live in nearby streets, secure your family pets in a safe, comfortable location or consider bringing them into your house during the display.

The festival is brought to you by the Asian Business Association of Whitehorse (ABAW), organisers of the popular Lunar New Year Festival in Box Hill.
