Tree management

Find out about our street tree planting program, how we manage our trees and how to request a new street tree. ...

Managing our trees is essential for maintaining the health and wellbeing of our community and surrounding environment.

We have over 90,000 street trees in Manningham and countless more throughout our reserves and natural areas. We strive to protect and enhance our tree population to benefit us now and our future generations.

How we manage our trees

Our tree management activities include:

  • street tree pruning program
  • electric line clearance
  • tree planting and maintenance
  • tree risk management
  • storm response
  • tree protection
  • urban greening project.

Tree planting program

Each year we plant up to 3000 trees throughout our streets and reserves. Our tree planting program is a critical part of future proofing Manningham against the negative effects of climate change.

Tree planting schedule

Street tree planting is done between May and September each year. Timings may vary to make the most of planting conditions.

Species of trees planted

Manningham has been divided into 18 precincts. Species have been selected based on urban forest principles, biodiversity values, risk, and landscape amenity. The species palette, a selection of native and exotic trees, will establish the long-term character for a street or main road.

Bonnie and Clyde
… Bonnie and Clyde Arts, theatre and music At the height of the Great … by Galean Pitt Presented by Waterdale Theatre Supported by Manningham's Community Grant Program . Doncaster Playhouse Arts Manningham Doncaster Playhouse Whats On … Bonnie and …

At the height of the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went from two small-town nobodies in West Texas to America's most renowned folk heroes and Texas law enforcement's worst nightmares.

Fearless, shameless and alluring, the Tony-nominated Bonnie and Clyde, from the legendary Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde, Civil War, Dracula) is the electrifying story of love, adventure and crime that captured the attention of an entire country.

When Bonnie and Clyde meet, their mutual cravings for excitement and fame immediately set them on a mission to chase their dreams. Their bold and reckless behaviour turns the young lovers' thrilling adventure into a downward spiral, putting themselves and their loved ones in trouble with the law. Forced to stay on the run, the lovers resort to robbery and murder to survive. As the infamous duo's fame grows bigger, their inevitable end draws nearer.

Bold new exhibition comes to Manningham
… Bold new exhibition comes to Manningham A new larger-than-life exhibition is now open at the Manningham Art Gallery in Doncaster. On this page Arts and Recreation Arts Manningham MC Square … Bold new exhibition comes to …
Article Content

A new larger-than-life exhibition is now open at the Manningham Art Gallery in Doncaster.

Pages of Me: A Bird, an Eye, Clouds, Ice cream, is a multimedia project by celebrated Melbourne artist and designer Beci Orpin.

Drawing from her textile-focused background, Orpin delves into mascot culture by creating a giant cat called Pomme, set in a display of oversized pages pulled from her sketchbook, blending bold patterns, found images and positive mantras.

The exhibition explores finding happiness through individuality and acceptance, and visitors are drawn in to read the mantras from Orpin’s pages and catch further glimpses of Pomme.

“The idea for the mascot came from seeing a series of photos of mascots caught in odd, unexpected places – doorways, ticket booths, elevators,” Orpin said.

“It struck me both as comical and a metaphor for getting ‘stuck in the cracks’. I often say that ‘the cracks’ are where I exist – somewhere between creative categories, never fully fitting into one genre.

“Though it can be challenging to exist in ‘the cracks’, it’s where I’m most authentic, where I can be fully myself and do my best work.”

Visitors are encouraged to get creative at the gallery themselves, drawing their own mascot, based on their unique qualities.

Orpin is known for her signature application of colour, shape and optimism. She has collaborated with major brands and organisations including Apple, Google Disney, Uniqlo and the Australian Ballet.

Manningham Mayor Deirdre Diamante said: “We’re thrilled to have such a highly regarded artist exhibit at the Manningham Gallery. It’s a wonderful exhibition and I encourage you to come and see it for yourself while you can.”

Pages of Me continues until Saturday 5 April 2025.

Manningham Art Gallery, 687 Doncaster Road, Doncaster, is open Wednesdays to Saturdays, 11.00am to 4.00pm.

For more information, visit our events calendar.

Catherine Opie: Binding Ties
… Opie - Oliver in a Tutu. Image courtesy of the artist. Arts Manningham Whats On … Catherine Opie: Binding Ties …

Catherine Opie has an international reputation as one of the leading photographers of her generation. The exhibition at Heide combines key works from across her oeuvre with a focus on notions of affiliation.

It traverses Opie’s early, most recognisable works exploring constructions of gender and sexuality, through alternative conceptions of the nuclear household—chosen family portraits that transcend traditional familial ties—to more recent musings on solidarity and collective action in the face of proliferating global crises.

In 1994, Heide exhibited eighteen of Opie’s portraits in the exhibition Persona Cognita, curated by Juliana Engberg. That exhibition represented Opie’s first showing in Australia, and now almost three decades later Heide will host the first survey of the artist’s work in this part of the world.

Life Without Me
… Life Without Me Arts, theatre and music If you don’t know who you are and you … Presented by PEP Productions. Doncaster Playhouse Arts Manningham Doncaster Playhouse Whats On … Life Without Me …

If you don’t know who you are and you don’t know where you’re headed, you might find yourself spiraling in ever-tightening circles until you come to rest in a nondescript part of town in a crummy two-star hotel, where the service is churlish, the lift doesn’t work, the toast is burnt and the pot plants set off your allergies.

But keep your expectations low, really low, and, who knows? – you might be pleasantly surprised by how everything works out.

Life without Me, by the much-awarded playwright, Daniel Keene, is a funny, honest and heart-warming story that invites us to question life, or at least our own. A mix of drifters, set in a hotel lobby, capturing the emotional truth of the almost absurd characters in search of the concept of happiness.

Presented by PEP Productions.

Soil Clay by Vivian Qiu
… workshops and open studios. MC Square Community Centre Arts Manningham … Soil Clay by Vivian Qiu …

As part of Craft Contemporary 2023 we are presenting:

Soil Clay, by Vivian Qiu

The Soil Clay Project is an ongoing exploration of the artist’s jewellery designs through her experience living and studying in China, Australia and Sweden.

Vivian uses her observational insights and collection of natural materials and common objects to mould into wearable artworks. She incorporates soil, fallen leaves and flowers, grass and rice to act as a binding agent for her work.

She establishes a connection between the wearer to place, time, and culture through materials and the ancient symbolism of oracle bone script.

Artworks from Vivian’s residency in Sweden will be on display.

@vivian_qiu_studio

On display at MC Square Community Centre (ground floor) from Monday 2 October to Sunday 5 November 2023.

Check out our other exhibit Are you Procrastinating? by Carol Yang or explore the full Craft Contemporary program guide.

This exhibition is part of Craft Contemporary 2023, an annual festival delivered by Craft Victoria – the largest celebration of craft and design in Victoria. The festival brings together practitioners, educators, industry, and craft lovers to explore material practice as it is today. See, touch, experience and be inspired by 150+ art experiences, including exhibitions, talks, demonstrations, workshops and open studios.
