What do you do with a broken toaster? Or with a bike when the wheel runs out of true? Or with a sweater full of moth holes? Toss it? No way! 

The Warrandyte Mechanics Institute and Arts Association (WMI&AA) runs the Warrandyte Repair Café at the Mechanics Hall on the first Sunday of each month.

At the Mechanics Hall, on the corner of Yarra Street and Mitchell Avenue, everything centres on making repairs. 

Starting from 10:30 am and ending at 12:30 pm, various volunteer repair experts (we call them our lovely ‘fixers’) will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge. 

Tools and materials will also be on hand. People visiting the Repair Café will bring along their broken items from home. Toasters, lamps, hair dryers, clothes, bikes, toys, crockery... anything that is broken is welcome, and can more than likely be repaired. 

The Repair Café specialists almost always have the know-how.

In recognition of Dementia Action Week, you’re invited to a free Dementia Awareness Community Seminar at Manningham Uniting Church and Community Centre.

This session will provide valuable insights and resources for people living with dementia, their carers, and the broader community. 

Together, we’ll foster greater understanding and support meaningful social connections.

During the session we will hear from Anita Koochew from Eastern Community Legal Centre, Dr Kate Lawler (Physiotherapist) – Physiotherapy for People Living with Dementia and Professor Paul Yates.

Afternoon tea will be provided.

The MannaCare Memory Place Cafe has been established to provide an opportunity for people with a dementia diagnosis and their carers to connect with others who are travelling a similar road. 

The cafe provides a relaxed, safe and supportive environment for people with a dementia diagnosis and their carers to enjoy time together.

Memory Place Cafe is open on the second Thursday of every month.

We all strive to maintain our health, avoid injuries, and live independently in our homes for as long as possible. However, falls remain one of the leading causes of injury and fatality among older adults, with approximately half of these incidents occurring in or around the home.

To address this important issue, Manningham Council, in collaboration with Access Health and Community, are offering a free, one-hour information session.

This session will cover:

• why older adults are at risk of falls
• how to reduce the risk of falls
• how to stay active and independent for longer
• where to find help to reduce or manage falls.

This information session is part of our commitment to working towards becoming an Age Friendly City.

Claudia will break down what these changes mean for older Australians, their families, and care partners — including updates to services, funding, and support pathways. 

Whether you're navigating aged care for the first time or supporting someone through the system, this session will help you feel more informed and prepared.

This Dementia Action Week, discover inclusive connections at our Talking Cafe! We believe in the power of shared stories and warm company, bringing together people living with dementia, their carers, and families. It's a place where every voice is valued, and every connection makes a difference.

Our Talking Cafes are weekly drop-in sessions at local cafes, perfect for socialising, learning about community happenings, and making new friends! A welcoming host will greet you each week and introduce any special guest speakers.

No booking is needed – just drop in when it suits you! Newcomers are always welcome. Each session runs for just one hour, and you're welcome to purchase a coffee or tea.

Join Elizabeth Baxter, Dementia Services Specialist, for an online session to learn about changes you can expect with dementia. 

She will explain how to plan for the changes, and what to do to support the person you care for stay safe, connected and active when living with dementia.

We welcome patchworkers, quilters and other creatives working with textiles.

New members welcome, no previous experience required. BYO projects.

We meet on the 4th Saturday each month; $5 per session.

The annual World Knitting Day event is a great opportunity to come together for those who love knitting and those who would like to learn.

This is a free, three-hour event and includes afternoon tea. 

Wool, needles and patterns will be available for all to use. 

Any donations of wool would be appreciated.

The Red Gum Café located in the Manningham Uniting Church and Community Centre, has now been accredited by Dementia Australia as being Dementia Friendly. 

The Red Gum Café has been established as an accessible and safe environment for people living with dementia, and their carers and families, with staff having successfully undertaken training to help people living with dementia to enjoy social and community connections. 

The café is open Tuesday to Friday, 9.00am to 3.30pm, and on Saturdays from 9.00am to 2.00pm.

A support group for carers assisting people living with dementia currently meets in the café on the first Friday of every month, at 1.30pm.

Please note: The Friday group is established and no new participants will be added. New additional meeting days and times will be arranged for those wanting to attend and connect.
