Article Content

We’re temporarily closing the Aranga Reserve dog park to prune trees that are extending onto Heatherwood School’s grounds.

When will the park be closed?

The park will be closed from Monday 6 January to Tuesday 7 January 2025.

Why is the park temporarily closing?

Significant tree limbs are extending onto the grounds of Heatherwood School.

We’re temporarily closing the park to prune these trees, which will help prevent any pontential hazards and keep our community safe.

By closing the park, we’re also avoiding startling your dog with loud machinery.

How will this closure affect me?

If you live nearby, you may notice construction noise during this period.

If you regularly visit this park with your dog, we encourage you to explore our nearby parks and reserves during these days.

Thanks for your understanding.

Pleasant Reserve is 5,254m² and is relatively undeveloped. The Sheahans Reserve Development Plan 2011 sets out the future development of Morang, Sheahans and Pleasant Reserves. Improvements to Pleasant Reserve include planting, a new path and a shade arch.

The reserve is part of an informal linear connection of parklands from Pleasant Reserve to Birrarung Park via Sheahans Reserve, Morang Reserve, the Kimberley Way footpath and Kimberley Reserve.  There is potential to connect the eastern end of Pleasant Reserve to Swanston Reserve along the natural drainage line. The enhancement of this linear park would greatly increase its usage by to local residents.

Join us and learn more about new public art in Doncaster and take part in an all-ages art activity.

As part of the Ayr St South shopping strip upgrade, a ground mural will be designed and installed by artist Tom Civil.

Tom will share his designs at Greythorn Bowls Club in an information session for the community, where you can meet the artist and discuss his ideas.

The information session will be followed by an all-ages art activity, where you will design your own footpath mural. Use the materials provided to work collaboratively, or own your own to create an artwork for your street.

  • Information session / meet the artist: 11.00am to 12.30pm
  • Art Activity: 1.00pm to 2.30pm

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided

About the artist

Tom Civil is an artist, muralist, community art facilitator and printmaker.

Tom has been making art in the streets of Melbourne for over 18 years, and has painted over 30 commissioned murals across town in the last ten years.

Tom's ground artworks reference through the language of mapping and symbology, our connection to nature in a heavily urbanised and concrete and asphalt covered world. The ground artworks also allow us to day-dream about how the places we live were in the past, and how they could be in the future. They also create fun interactive play moments in our daily lives.

Women’s and girls’ sport is set for a boost in Wonga Park with the local netball facility to undergo a major redevelopment.

We have secured a $1.47 million grant to upgrade the Wonga Park Netball Facility through the Australian Government’s Play Our Way program.

This funding is in addition to $450,000 allocated in Council’s 2024/25 capital works budget to deliver a new pavilion, lighting and to reconstruct the netball courts.

Our Mayor, Councillor Deirdre Diamante, welcomed the funding announcement, describing it as a huge win for women and girls’ sport and the Wonga Park community.

“We’d like to thank the Australian Government for their support in providing quality facilities for women and girls in Manningham that help reduce barriers and increase participation in sport and physical activity,” Cr Diamante said.

“Advocating for more inclusive and equal community facilities is a key part of Council's role and we’re thrilled that we’ve been able to achieve this significant win in collaboration with Wonga Park Netball Club.

“This is going to make a huge difference to the club and players – providing toilets, change facilities and storage at the courts. New lighting will also allow the club to train in the evenings,” the Mayor added.

Wonga Park Netball Club spokesperson, Jeanette Morriss, said the funding announcement was a fantastic early Christmas present for the club.

“We are just so excited. It’s going to be amazing for women and girls in sport and will create a much safer and inclusive space for our 150 players,” Ms Morriss said.

“We would like to thank the Federal Government for the funding and the work Councillors and Council staff have done in advocating on our behalf,” she said.
