From Wednesday 21 October, Manningham Art Gallery presents concurrent solo exhibitions by graduate artists Rachel Jones and Nicole Moorhouse.
Rachel Jones’ exhibition Apposite is a series of playful artistic propositions for alleviating social anxiety. The exhibition presents a selection of stark, minimalist sculptural forms alongside photographs of Jones interacting with those objects in often absurd poses and situations.
For the artist, these interactions are moments of calm, opportunities to relax or to do something that is right for that moment. The works invite the audience to imagine how interactions with non-functional objects in their own lives provide them with a similar sense of comfort that counterbalances modern, day-to-day pressures.
Imagine presents a collection of Nicole Moorhouse’s bold abstract paintings based upon the detritus of modern living. Moorhouse’s artistic process begins with her gleaning once loved, now discarded objects that she then assembles into still-life arrangements. These arrangements are then painted repeatedly across her canvases to create beautifully balanced and symmetrical compositions. The resulting works become an opportunity to reassess the physical beauty of the individual objects that appear within.
