Manningham Environment Seminar Series - Threatened Fauna Species of Manningham
Spend an evening with local ecologist John Harris and learn about threatened fauna species that are found locally in Manningham
Manningham is home to a significant number of threatened species, both animals and plants, facing threats like habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. The municipality has identified 56 threatened animal species, including some of national and state significance like the Brush-tailed Phascogale, Grey-headed Flying-fox, Swift Parrot, and Barking Owl. Additionally, there are 466 threatened plant species, with a substantial portion (246) considered critically endangered. #Swifft State Wide Integrated Flora and Fauna Teams
A species is determined to be threatened when its population within a specific geographic area (like Manningham or Victoria) is at risk of extinction, even if it's not globally threatened. This can happen due to factors like habitat loss, invasive species, or pollution within that area, making the species susceptible to local extinction.

The Aranga Reserve off-lead dog park is set for an upgrade to improve the park’s safety, usability and comfort for both dogs and their owners.
This upgrade will be delivered with support from a $200,000 State Government grant, through Round 2 funding of its New and Upgraded Dog Parks program.
Located in Donvale, Aranga Reserve features a fenced dog activity park, playspace, and picnic area.
The concept for the grant application was developed in consultation with Friends of Manningham Dogs and Cats (FOMDAC). The proposed improvements include:
new entry gates and fencing to improve access and safety
new and upgraded equipment and play areas
additional seating and shaded areas
new lighting to improve safety
additional planting to improve shade.
The total project budget is $300,000.
Consultation on this upgrade is planned for late 2025, with delivery expected in the 2025–26 financial year.
The Aranga Reserve dog park upgrade is supported by the Victorian Government through the New and Upgraded Dog Parks program.
Manningham Council has signed the contract to purchase 576-578 Park Road, Park Orchards as part of its planning for a new Park Orchards Community House and Learning Centre....
We have signed the contract to purchase 576-578 Park Road, Park Orchards as part of its planning for a new Park Orchards Community House and Learning Centre.
A priority action in our Community Infrastructure Plan, discussions and advocacy have already commenced for the replacement of this popular neighbourhood house and it is hoped that this significant investment will be the catalyst for investment from other levels of government.
Our Mayor, Deirdre Diamante, said the existing community house needs replacing to bring programs and services together.
"The Community House is widely used and offers a variety of programs and services in learning, fitness and art for all ages, and includes a well-loved childcare facility.
“The current building is coming to the end of its useful life, has limited accessibility and is too small to cater to all programs. These limitations have resulted in programs moving to different locations and spread across multiple local venues.
“By bringing these programs together into one building with better access and more space, we can improve efficiency and better support the community’s growing needs.”
The location of the new property, adjacent to the existing Community House at 572 Park Road, will allow for more space for the variety of programs on offer.
“Located in the heart of Park Orchards, as part of a community and education precinct and near public bus transport, the site will maintain convenient access to childcare, schools, recreational areas, and shops.” Cr Diamante added.
The purchase of 576-578 Park Road is part of our long-term planning to replace this important neighbourhood house for Park Orchards.
Neighbourhood houses are predominantly funded by government grants and additional state and commonwealth government funding will be needed to deliver this new community facility.
“We have purchased this property as part of our long-term plan for the community house and local area. We’re pleased to be able to secure a site for a new centre in Park Orchards and will continue to advocate for State and Federal funding to deliver it.”
The purchase was funded by our Strategic Fund which is part of our 10 Year Financial Plan 2024/25 to 2033/34.

Connecting our community through safe footpaths is one of the ways we’re building a better Manningham.
As part of our 2024/25 Capital Works Program, we’re constructing a new refuge island on Ringwood Warrandyte Road, Warrandyte, to improve accessibility and safety.
Works will include:
- construction of a refuge island
- kerb and channel installation
- footpath construction
- upgrades to the existing bus stop
- new signage and line-marking.
Where is it?
The refuge island will be built on the eastern and western sides of Ringwood Warrandyte Road, Warrandyte, next to the intersection of Russell Road.
Why is the footpath needed?
The new refuge island and footpath will improve pedestrian connectivity, safety, and accessibility around the area. It will link the existing river reserve trail with Stonehouse Café, the bus stop, and the Russell/Mullens intersection on the western side of Ringwood-Warrandyte Road. The upgrade will provide a safe and accessible walking route to encourage healthier, more active lifestyles.
When will the works happen?
The footpath and refuge island construction is expected to begin in June 2025. The timing for the bus stop upgrade is yet to be confirmed.
Timelines are subject to weather conditions and contractor availability.
How will the works affect me?
The works will take place on weekdays during the hours of 7.00am and 5.00pm. There will be some construction noise and minor traffic delays during these hours.
Construction will require a single lane road closure, sections of the footpath to be closed and reduced on-street parking. We will have traffic management and signage on site to guide you through the area. Some properties will have driveway access limited during construction. We will contact the affected properties directly before construction.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to improve the footpath connections in your area.

We are currently seeking community ideas and input to help develop a masterplan for the future of Stintons Reserve in Park Orchards.
We are inviting community members to share their thoughts and ideas about what they would like to see at the reserve via a community survey, closing on Monday 29 July.
The masterplan will guide the future use, development and upgrade of facilities within the reserve over the next 20 years.
Manningham Mayor, Councillor Carli Lange, said Stintons Reserve is an important local reserve for sport, recreation and dog exercise activities in Park Orchards.
“This is a much-loved local reserve and we want to hear your ideas as we plan for its future,” Cr Lange said.
“We understand there are a wide variety of user groups and community members that use Stintons Reserve and want to make sure it meets the needs of our growing community now and into the future.
“The masterplan will look at how our community currently uses the reserve along with future uses and potential improvements.”
“I encourage everyone to find out more, get involved and tell us what you would like to see at Stintons Reserve by completing our community survey,” Cr Lange said.
“We want to continue to keep this space welcoming, accessible and inclusive, so that everyone can enjoy it for their health and wellbeing.”
Community input will help inform the development of a draft Stintons Reserve Masterplan, which will be released for public consultation and community feedback next year.
For more information and to complete the survey before Monday 29 July, visit YourSay Manningham Stintons Reserve Masterplan.
