The inspiration behind Victoria Street’s play tower
Did you know that the giant play tower at Victoria Street playground is inspired by Manningham’s historic Doncaster Tower? Built by Alfred Hummel in 1879 and located at the top of Doncaster Hill, Doncaster Tower became a popular lookout offering stunning panoramic views and attracting visitors from all over Melbourne.
Although the tower was demolished in 1914, its legacy continues at Victoria Street playground. For more interesting information, including a scale model of the tower, stop by Schramm’s Cottage Museum, off Victoria Street in Rieschiecks Reserve.
