One of Manningham's most recognisable landmarks is moving to a new home.

The iconic River Peel sculpture will be relocated from the Fitzsimons Lane and Porter Street roundabout in Templestowe to a site further along Fitzsimons Lane just south of the Yarra River. 

The River Peel sculpture is being relocated as part of the Major Road Projects Victoria upgrade to Fitzsimons Lane. The roundabout, which has been home to the sculpture for over ten years, is being upgraded to traffic lights to make it easier and safer to travel through. 

The Fitzsimons Lane upgrade plans to reduce congestion in peak periods to provide more reliable travel times, improve safety and make walking and cycling around the community safer. 

The plate steel sculpture was created in 2000 by artists Michael Bellemo and Catriona Macleod. The design reflects the Yarra River curves, as it bends and turns through the area, and an apple peel, as a homage to the history of orchards in the Doncaster and Templestowe areas.

The River Peel sculpture's new location will ensure it stays a gateway piece for Manningham and enjoyed by people in the 60,000+ vehicles using Fitzsimons Lane every day.
