As Australia’s first Indigenous woman and Northern Territorian to win gold at the Olympics, Nova Peris OAM joins the Manningham community to celebrate of this year’s International Women’s Day.  

Celebrating the achievements and challenges of women globally, this year’s International Women’s Day event on March 8, invites the men and women of our community to a special gala dinner at the Manningham Function Centre. 

Manningham Council Mayor Cr Andrew Conlon said this year’s theme, Press for Progress, was a strong call-to-action to unite the community, press forward and progress gender parity together. 

“It’s also a chance for our community to acknowledge the remarkable contribution of women across business, social, education and political spheres of our society,” he said. 

The two-course dinner and networking event is presented by Manningham Council and will raise funds for the Food for Thought Network, an inclusive women’s network helping women realise their full potential through development and networking opportunities. 

Food for Thought Network founder, Varvara Ioannou said this year, the organisation focused on indigenous women, one of the most disadvantaged groups in the community. 

“Nova Peris is not only an inspiring role model to indigenous women but women everywhere,” she said. “We’re proud to partner with Manningham Council on this event.”

The event will be hosted by Jo Pearson, one of Australia’s leading media identities. Nova Peris OAM will deliver the keynote speech. 

Nova Peris OAM was also the first Indigenous woman elected to the Federal Parliament and actively raises awareness on social issues including domestic violence, depression, youth services and youth suicides.
