In February 2020 the Victorian Government released the ‘Recycling Victoria – Victoria’s circular economy and action plan’. The State Government have set a range of targets and requirements to reduce waste going to landfill.

Manningham Council has endorsed the introduction of a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service from 1 July 2023.

The FOGO service will allow you to dispose of all food waste in your existing green-lidded garden bin along with your garden waste.

Currently almost 56% of kerbside waste in Manningham sent to landfill is food waste. When food and garden waste breaks down, it produces the harmful greenhouse gas methane, which contributes to climate change.

When food waste is collected and properly processed, it is turned into high grade compost which is then used to enrich the soil.

Residents with a residential Council waste service will receive a kitchen caddy and compostable caddy liners to make it easier for you to collect food waste, before transferring into the FOGO bin.

Mayor, Cr Michelle Kleinert said that the introduction of FOGO is a fantastic opportunity for the community to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

“One of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases will be disposing of your food waste into the FOGO bin.”

“Many residents have been asking for this service. We are proud to be able to offer this sustainable option for food waste disposal.”

From 1 July 2023 we will commence a weekly FOGO and fortnightly garbage and recycling kerbside collection service.

Detailed information about the changes will be provided over the coming months.
