Prepare your Family for Fire Emergencies and Extreme Heat this summer

With the weather warming up, now is the time to make sure you and your family are prepared for heat waves and bushfires.

Being prepared is best way to keep you and your family safe this summer.   

Prepare for the bushfire season 

Prepare your property

Get your property ready and clean up around your house – clear gutters, remove rubbish and maintain your gardens. 

Plan ahead 

Have a thorough emergency plan (with a backup plan!) that you have discussed with your family and neighbours. You can use this template from the CFA. 

Practice your plan 

Have a plan that you have practised and discussed with your family and neighbours.  Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do.

Pack a bag

Pack a bag with essential items

Pay attention

Ensure you understand the Fire Danger Ratings and be aware of what’s happening around you.

Watch or listen to an emergency broadcaster, check websites or social media and download the Vic Emergency app.  The Vic Emergency app is available for download from the Apps Store and Google Play.  Always call 000 in an emergency.

Drink water

Carry water with you and take small sips frequently.

Hot cars kill 

Never leave kids, adults or pets in cars – the temperature can double in minutes!

Find ways to keep cool 

Stay indoors, visit air-conditioned places and dress for the weather.

Plan ahead

Keep up to date with weather forecasts, download the Vic Emergency App and pay attention! 

Check in on family and friends 

Look out for those most at risk and don’t forget your pets!
