Matt Butterworth wins Manningham Victorian Ceramic Art Award

Melbourne ceramicist Matt Butterworth has won the prestigious Manningham Victorian Ceramic Art Award 2019, taking home the $10,000 Major Prize for his three-piece bowl work, Hung, Drawn and Quartered, Cut and A Beautiful Cut.  

Established in 2009, the biennial acquisitive award supports Victorian studio ceramics and acknowledges the special place ceramics have in the Manningham region. 

The awards is an important contribution to the Victorian creative industry, attracting a diverse range of artists across the state. 

This year’s exhibition attracted more than 170 entries from all over Victoria.  

This year’s guest judge is Eva Czernis-Ryl, a curator at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney. Eva has published, lectured and curated exhibitions in decorative arts and design from the 18th century to the present. 

Award recipient, Matt Butterworth said he was absolutely thrilled and humbled to have been awarded the 2019 prize. 

“Thank you Manningham Council for your continued support of ceramic art,” he said. 

Matt also offered his congratulations to Felicity Law, Pattie Beerens, Richard Greenacre and Angela Nagel as recipients of the Merit Award Acquisitions. 

All entries are on exhibition at the Manningham Arts Gallery until Saturday 14 September. 

Following the exhibition acquired works are displayed in cases throughout Manningham Civic Centre and MC Square.
